  2. Integrated MSc. & Ph.D. in Physics & Astrophysics: IIA is happy to announce the launch of the integrated Phd Programme (IPhD) in Physics. The Integrated PhD Programme (IPhD) will admit bright, highly motivated students with Bachelor’s degree in Science/Engineering, selected on an all-India basis. Selected candidates will be offered a fellowship of Rs.10,000/- p.m., an annual book grant, accommodation, and medical facilities. The selection procedure will involve: a written test and personal interview at IIA, Bangalore. Candidates qualified in Physics test in JEST 2009/ Physics test in GATE 2009 (with high percentile) are exempted from the written test. Candidates called for the interview at IIA, Bangalore will be paid return train fare in II Sleeper Class or equivalent bus fare by the shortest route on production of original tickets. Integrated M.Tech – Ph.D. in Astronomical Instrumentation: IIA is happy to announce the launch of the Integrated M.Tech.- Ph.D (Tech) course in Astronomical Instrumentation in collaboration with Department of Applied optics and photonics, Calcutta University (CU). The Degree will be awarded by the University of Calcutta. The duration of M.Tech course work will be of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M. Tech course a student can opt for registration for Ph.D (Tech) programme at Calcutta University, subjected to a selection procedure and minimum cut-off grade. The selection procedure will involve: a written test and personal interview at IIA, Bangalore. Candidates qualified in Physics test in JEST 2009/ Physics test in GATE 2009 (with high percentile)/ UGC-CSIR NET with fellowship are exempted from the written test. NEST’09: M.Sc. Integrated, NISER & UM-DAE-CBS

Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India National Entrance Screening Test 2009 (NEST 2009) for Admission to 5 year M.Sc. (Integrated) Programme at NISER, Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CBS, Mumbai

National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar

NISER has been set up by the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India to impart high-quality science education in a vibrant academic ambience with a faculty of distinguished scientists and teachers. NISER offers 5-year integrated M.Sc. Programme in biological, chemical, mathematical and physical sciences. At present, NISER functions from the beautiful campus of Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, a renowned Institute with state-of-art infrastructure that includes an excellent library, a large computer center and a number of research laboratories. Degrees at NISER will be awarded by the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be University within the Department of Atomic Energy. This year there are 52 seats, including reserved seats for SC/ST/OBC candidates and persons with disability (PD) as per Government norms. UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS), Mumbai

The Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India has set up a new autonomous center of excellence in basic sciences in Mumbai. UM-DAE CBS, is to be an international class center for high quality teaching embedded in a vibrant post-graduate and research environment with some of the best teachers and scientists from major institutions in the city (TIFR, BARC, I IT Bombay) and the University and its colleges on its faculty. The center is located in the Kalina campus of the University of Mumbai. The degrees at UM-DAE CBS are awarded by the 150 year old University of Mumbai.

Tentatively, there will be 14 seats in Physics stream, 10 in Mathematics and 6 in Life Sciences with reservations as per Government norms, including reservation for persons with disability (PD). The details are on the CBS website (http://www.tifr.res.in/~cbs).

Both the institutes have residential campuses with suitable accommodation and boarding facilities. The academic programmes of both the institutes have a balanced semester-based course structure with continuous assessment witliin a flexible seamless curriculum designed to emphasize interdisciplinary nature of science in 21st century. The curriculum vigorously seeks to inculcate exploration, innovation and research so as to develop a pool of talented and motivated scientific personnel for the national programmes pursued by the Department of Atomic Energy. Candidates may apply to NISER, CBS or both. Selected candidates will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5000/- and a yearly booh/contingency grant.

Eligibility for Admission

  1. Qualification: General category and OBC candidates must have secured 60% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in class XII (or equivalent) and class X (or equivalent) examination from any recognized board in India. For SC/ST/PD candidates the corresponding requirement is 55% marks in aggregate. Candidates must have passed the class XII (or equivalent) examination in 2007 or 2008 or are appearing in 2009. Where only letter grade is available, a certificate from the board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required. In absence of such a certificate, the decision of the admission committee of respective institution will be final.
  2. Age limit: General category and OBC candidates born after October 1,1984 are eligible to apply. Age limit is relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST/PD candidates.

 
Admission Procedure: A National Entrance Screening Test (NEST-2009) will be conducted at a number of centers in India on Sunday, May 10, 2009 by the NEST cell at NISER, Bhubaneswar. Selection of the candidates will be based on the results of the NEST-2009 examination. Names of the candidates shortlisted on the basis of their performance in NEST-2009 examination will be announced, in order of merit, on or before June 8,2009 on the websites of the two institutes.

NEST-2009 Examination: The NEST-2009 examination will consist of five sections. First section is compulsory for all candidates. Four other sections will consist of questions on biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics respectively. Candidates are required to attempt any three of these four sections. The questions in NEST-2009 examination will be of objective type designed to test the candidate’s subject comprehension and analytic ability. The examination will be conducted on May 10,2009 and the duration is of three hours.

How To Apply?: Application forms and brochures will become available on NISER website (http://niser.ac.in/NEST) from 5 pm on Januarys, 2009. Candidates may follow any of the three steps to apply.

  1. They may follow the instructions on the website and fill up the application form on-line and send the application fee in form of a demand draft separately to The Chief Coordinator, NEST-2009, NISER, Institute of Physics Campus, Bhubaneswar 751005.
  2. They may download the form and brochure, fill up the form and send itto the above address along with application fee in form of a demand draft to the address mentioned above.
  3. They may send a lettertoThe Chief Coordinator, NEST-2009, NISER, Institute of Physics Campus, Bhubaneswar 751 005 requesting application form and brochure. On the receipt of the application form and the brochure the candidate may fill up the form and send the completed application form along with the draft for application fee to the address mentioned above.

Last date for requesting application form is March 6, 2009 and last date for receipt of filled application form and draft is April 3, 2009. On-line application forms will also freeze on April 3,2009.

Application Fee: The application fee for general category and OBC male candidates is Rs. 500/-. The fee for SC/ST/PD and female candidates is Rs. 250/-.The fee is to be paid in form of a demand draft in favour of NISER-NEST, payable at Bhubaneswar and should reach the NEST-2009 cell by April 3,2009.The application sent without the proper application fee in the form of demand draft will be considered incomplete. Such applications will be discarded.
